【制法】將檀香的心材切細，置大型蒸餾器內，經蒸餾后，可得3～5%的檀香油。
此油宜密貯于瓶中，避免日光照射及泄氣。
【性狀】純檀香袖為無色乃至淡黃色略有粘性的油液，有檀香固有的香氣。
左旋性；在20℃能溶于6倍量之70%的乙醇中；
比重0.973～0.985(25℃)，旋光度-15～-20°。
檀香油在醫(yī)藥上也有廣泛的用途，具有清涼、收斂、強心、滋補、潤滑皮膚等多重功效，可用來治療膽汁病，膀胱炎、淋病以及腹痛、發(fā)熱、嘔吐等病癥，對龜裂、富貴手、黑斑、蚊蟲咬傷等癥特別有效，古來就是對治皮膚病的重要藥品。
